Animals Prohibited in Food Establishments

The Summit County Health Department wants to remind all restaurants and customers of regulations regarding animals on restaurant premises’. Federal food code (2009 FDA Food Code 6-501.115) prohibits animals in food establishments. This includes all outdoor dining areas and patios. The exceptions to this rule are:

  1. Decorative fish in an aquarium.
  2. Patrol dogs accompanying police or security.
  3. Service animals controlled by a disabled person in areas not used for food preparation.

The Health Department will continue to enforce these regulations. Restaurants that do not adhere to this federal food code may face penalties and potential closures. At this time, conditions do not exist to allow dogs on restaurant premises.

This rule has been enacted to keep commercial food service safe and your dining experience enjoyable.
